Something is Happening - Sermon Series
It is Martin Luther King Day as
I write this. It is 10 degrees, and snowing pretty hard. It is beautiful. Silent
and still. The blanket of snow seems to invite reflection, a time for listening.
"It came a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter..."
I’ve been with you 3 months
now, long enough to make some observations. I marvel at the buzz and energy of
the church. It seems more than just the normal bump in activities that often
accompanies the arrival of a new pastor. You’ve experienced that. So have I.
That phenomenon is a good thing, a polite and good spirited infusion of optimism
and hope.
But, what I sense here is more
than that. Something is happening. It’s as if the church has been prepared for a
new era, a new existence. It’s as if, like the seed beneath the blanket of snow
that pulses and pushes to be born, St. Luke is ready to come forth. It seems to
me that, like the cosmic, constant background hum of the Universe that tells of
a Creative Force which is behind everything, St. Luke is humming with
anticipation, eagerness, and hope. And Brad and I are the lucky pastors
privileged to listen to the hum with you, and try and discern what It is saying.
To that end, Brad and I would
like to share a broad vision with you which we feel we have been given. We offer
it as a way of beginning the dialogue, of starting the conversation, about our
future together…about what the Hum is saying.
So, the next 3 Sundays in
worship, we will seek to speak to this vision. The first 2 Sundays (1/27 and
2/3) will try to lift up what our history and what our present life is telling
us about our future. The third Sunday (2/10) will then draw upon these to
suggest a vision for what that future might be like.
Something is happening at St.
Luke. I think it is the future happening. I hope you will plan to be here with
us as we seek to catch a glimpse of what that might be, and how you can be a
part of it.
Grace and Peace…………….Gwin
