Peace and Justice Focus Group                                            Back

 

Peace and Justice Focus Group was able to contribute to the life of the St. Luke Community through the following activities and events.

 

·   Information and Letter writing table over a period of 6 weeks in   February and March covering topics such as Darfur, the war in Iraq, torture, and global warming.

 

·   Peace Jam Participation with the High School Youth.

 

·   St. Luke hosted a meeting of ISAIAH with St. Luke participation.

 

·   St. Luke hosted Take Action Minnesota meeting with participation of many St. Luke members.

 

·   St. Luke hosted Congregations Concerned for Children.

 

·   Brought the new Sanctuary Movement Pledge to Session.  Session approved it.

 

·   Many speakers were brought to St. Luke through Peace and Justice.  They included 1)Kevin Winge of Open Arms regarding efforts here in the Twin Cities as well as in Africa.  2) Chante Wolf of Veterans for Peace, 3) Dick Lundy with the Center for Torture, 4)  Stephen Miles – Oath Betrayed

 

·   Peacemakers in Residence – Yody Moran from Peru, and David Andrews with Presbyterian Peacemakers, spent 10 days with us speaking about the need for economic and environmental justice.  Peace and Justice members as well as our pastor, Brad Froslee, arranged multiple opportunities for presentations to St. Luke, to organizations and schools St. Luke members are affiliated with, and to other congregations within the Presbytery.  Efforts were made to include members of the Latin America Focus Group and Frank Babka was a part of the planning and hosting.  The Kirk family and the Keenan Family hosted the Peacemakers in their homes. 

 

·   Actions for Peace have been in the Challenge.

 

·   We ended the year by beginning to plan the trip to Washington D.C. with Christian Peace Witness for Iraq. 

 

·   Peace and Justice Education funds have been used to assist the Environmental Focus Group in their efforts as well.

 

·   Set up and provided materials for Amnesty International Holiday Card Campaign.

 

·   Individual members have been involved in peace rallies/protests, Every Church a Peace Church, FOR, ISAIAH, Take Action Minnesota, Amnesty International, MAPS, the Candle Light Service for the Children of Iraq.
