Outreach Focus Groups
St. Luke takes an active role in working for social justice issues in the
local community and throughout the world. "Focus Groups"
organize around an issue of interest to members. These groups will bring
in speakers for adult education classes and focus group meetings, organize
volunteers for service projects, sponsor mission trips, and donate money
to other groups with similar concerns. The areas of involvement at St.
Luke include:
BeFrienders:
Evelyn Headen, Carolyn Cuthill, Becky Thacher-Bell, Pamela Layton, Lynn Cox, Jean Ice, Judy Nelson
BeFriender Ministry - A Listening Presence
is a national, ecumenical
organization
that provides
leadership training and program support
for a listening ministry of lay pastoral care.
One-to-One Giving
St. Luke has a long history of giving away its money to help others. We
strive to give away one dollar for every dollar we spend on our program
and capital expenses. That's a tough objective, and we're not there many
years, but it is one way we try to live out our values as a community of
faith.
Opportunities for Outreach
St. Luke Seminar: St. Luke sponsors an annual weekend
educational seminar focusing on a different topic each year. In
2005 we sponsored active nonviolence training. In 2006, we focused
on immigration issues. A
list of resources for becoming an activist for humane immigration
policy can be found at this link. The 2007 topic will focus on the
environment.
Highway Clean-up: Each fall and spring join other St. Lukers
to clean up a one mile stretch of Highway 101 in Minnetonka.
Habitat for Humanity: Ongoing. St. Lukers work
throughout the year on local Habitat projects. If you are interested
in joining the work crew, contact Arlene Nystuen or Ed Schuck.
Pine Ridge: Working trips to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation
are scheduled for men and women throughout the year. Contact Lyle
Meyer for details on upcoming men's trips. Contact Cecy Faster for
information about women's trips.
Families Moving Forward: We offer housing in the church to
families who are homeless. We provide on-site hosts and serve
breakfasts and dinners. Watch for the dates and sign up to help.
Contact Steve Warner or Sheryl Bjork for more information.
Intergenerational Work Trip to Haiti: Sixteen senior high
youth and adults went to Haiti in June 2006. Another trip is being
planned for June 2008, continuing our relationship with Haiti
Outreach, a community development program centered in Pignon, Haiti.
