NEWS OF THE ST. LUKE COMMUNITY

Our Sympathy

Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave and Judy Cline.  Judy’s mother, Mary Ellenberger, passed away this past week.

Lunch with Gwin

Gwin has carved out lunch hour on Mondays and Wednesdays to spend getting to know St. Lukers.  You can bring a bag lunch, head over to Beanhaven, or whatever you choose.  Sign up for a date that works for you at the back of the sanctuary.

St. Lukers in Theater

Hannah Crannell is in a play at Stages Theatre in Hopkins from April 18 through May 18.  It’s called “The Reluctant Dragon” and is based on the children’s book by Kenneth Grahame.  She has a smaller role, but a very fun one.  “She makes a very nice sheep.”—Gerry Graves.  More info is available at Stagestheatre.org.

Bob Thomas is directing "Garage Sale:  The Play" at the Chaska Valley Family Theater over Mother's Day weekend, May 9 - 11.  It's a heartwarming and humorous story of 9 women who are holding their annual garage sale just after the funeral of a dear friend.  More information is available at CVFT.org.

May 11           Press(ing) for the Whole Story with Bob Cuthill

The way in which the current news is dealt with in all forms of media has evolved into a very different reality of “news” than it was even 10 years ago.  Going back 50, 100 or 200 years there are stark differences.  These differences are not only on how we receive news but how it is prepared for distribution.

We will talk about where we go for our news information, and how those particular sources are shaped and spun.  Then we will explore together where there are possible options for us to get more of the truth and facts about a “news story.”

Note this Bible passage:  John 8:31—Jesus said, “If you believe in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

The theological underpinning to this discussion will deal with the core belief of Presbyterians that we should always be seeking the truth.  A truth that makes us “free” in faith and life.  We are a people on a truth journey.  Especially, in our search to know a God through Jesus who is believable and true to both fact and spirit.  A God who never needs to fear “vetting.”

Greetings to all St. Lukers:  Do you like to sing for pleasure?  Do you play an instrument in your spare time?  Would you like to share your musical talent during our summertime worship?  From the second Sunday in June through the end of August, St. Luke Church needs your special talents during the service.

There will be a sign up sheet in the back of the sanctuary.  Please take a look and see if there is a Sunday that you are able to sign up something that fits into your busy summer schedule.  Please feel free to contact Hsu-hui (612-377-0316 or by email at wang1121@comcast.net).  She will be more than happy to answer your questions.

On Sunday, June 8, we will be recognizing all graduates in the worship service at St. Luke.  If you know of or are a current graduate (high school, college, technical institute, or an advanced degree) please contact the church office (952-473-7378 or stluke@pclink.com) with the 1) name of the graduate 2) name of school 3) degree attained and 4) future plans.  We look forward to celebrating with the graduates in worship on June 8.

Pre-Greeters/Door People Wanted

We would like to request anyone who would be willing to volunteer to be at the door (one upper, one lower) to welcome people and direct visitors to the various areas of the church.  There will be maps available and information about children's education.  There are also packets of information to hand to visitors.  Starting in April, pick a Sunday, high schoolers welcome.  Let Nancy Olmsted, Sue Kirchhoff, or Jean Ice, know of your interest, and we will put you on the calendar.

Coloring books and baby wipes

Our Sunday Nursery could use a few things.  If you could donate baby wipes or coloring books, please drop them off in the nursery.  Thank you.

The Book Group

The next book group selection is Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks.  We will meet at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, May 21, at Jenna Sticker’s, 19048 St. Edwards Court, Eden Prairie, 952-934-3016.

“A vividly imagined and strangely consoling tale of hope in a time of despair.”—O, The Oprah Magazine

“A former war correspondent, Brooks proves a gifted storyteller as she subtly reveals how ignorance, hatred and mistrust can be as deadly as any virus.  Based in part on the true story of Eyam, a rural Debyshire village whose rector persuaded residents to voluntarily quarantine themselves during the plague, YEAR OF WONDERS is itself a wonder.”—People Magazine

Soup & Soul: Sunday Evenings

As Mothers' Day conflicts with our usual meeting time, there will be no Soup & Soul in May.  We will reconvene on June 8, Sunday at 6:00 pm.  Jill Engeswick will be the hostess (952-368-3383 in Chaska) and provide the soup.  Please RSVP Jill if you are coming to discuss supplemental food arrangements.  We will discuss Harper Lee's classic, To Kill A Mockingbird and all are welcome!

Candlelight Service in memory of innocent victims of war

Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 pm

An Interfaith Candlelight Service for Child Victims of War will be held at Plymouth Presbyterian Church (PPC) in Plymouth on Thursday, May 8 at 7 pm.  This event is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Group of PPC and Northwest Neighbors for Peace.  The award-winning Land of Lakes Choirboys will participate in the service and sing the moving “Prayer of the Children.”  Gwin will be one of the speakers.

The service will commemorate the children who have been and continue to be victimized by war and violence.  By keeping the memory of these innocent children alive in our hearts, we hope to renew our resolve to change the conditions that cause their suffering and death.

Mother’s Day was selected for this event to honor the spirit of Julia Ward Howe’s 1870 Mother’s Day proclamation establishing “Mother’s Day,” in which she said, ‘We, the women of one country, will be too tender to those of another country to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs.”

Plymouth Presbyterian Church is located at 3755 Dunkirk Lane N in Plymouth, ¼ mile northeast of the stoplight at Hwy #55 and Co. Rd. #9, slightly east of Dundee Nursery.  For further information call Eileen at  763-545-2296 or Linda, at 763-478-4956.  Submitted by Maureen Henderson

World Refugee Day

June 20, 2008

I would like to extend the invitation to you to get involved in World Refugee Day!  If you were involved last year, here is your chance to claim your choice spot as a volunteer!  If you are new to World Refugee Day, you are in for a treat!

World Refugee Day (WRD) was designated by the United Nations General Assembly back in 2000 as a day to recognize refugees worldwide, to advocate on their behalf, celebrate their successes and to welcome them into new communities.  This year we will be hosting WRD at Minnehaha Park from 2:00-9:00 pm on Friday, June 20.  We have a host of entertainers, vendors and resources lined up and are now looking for volunteers to help us pull it all off!  It should be a vibrant and exciting day, so don’t miss your chance to become a part of it!

We have two dates on which we are looking for assistance:

Saturday, May 17

Our first step is to advertise the event.  We are looking for volunteers to help us hang posters all over the Twin Cities.  We will divide the Metro area into neighborhoods and/or by zip code; you will receive a stack of posters, a list of libraries, recreation centers, etc and a map telling you how to get from one place to another.

We will start with a pizza party around noon, and then we will all head out to our various locations!  I would highly suggest signing up with a partner so one can drive and the other can navigate.  This is a fun way to get to know a small part of the Cities or to get your community involved in the day by spreading the news.

If you are interested or if you have questions, please let me know!  Email is best (Sharon.Bangsund@lssmn.org).

Friday, June 20

The actual event!  More info will be sent at a later date, but if you would like to sign up early, we will be looking for people to help with set up and tear down, entertainment, parking, recognition, the Kids’ Zone, the resource fair and many, many more!  We ask that you commit to a 2 hour slot during the day.  Set up will start at 12:00 pm.

We do have a website, so if you would like more information, please go to www.tcworldrefugeeday.org.

We cannot have too many volunteers, so please share this with anyone and everyone you know!  Looking forward to meeting you all!
